Househunters seeking luxury homes have distinct preferences when it comes to their new house’s size and offerings. A recent survey conducted by Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate found that today’s luxury home buyers are familiar with the current real estate market and confident about finding their desired features within their home.

“The luxury homebuyer has high standards and invests the money, the time and the commitment to making their home fit their needs and reflect who they are,” said Sherry Chris, president and CEO of Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate. “They do this so well that nearly all – 93 percent – believe their house is the best one on their block.”

Key findings of the study show that luxury home shoppers want:

Upgrades: 60 percent of survey respondents said they would rather have more upgrades in their new home than additional square footage. In fact, 94 percent said they would be willing to give up 1,000 square feet of space in order to have the upgrades they desire.

Technology: High-tech is high on the list of requirements for luxury home buyers, with 87 percent saying they wouldn’t consider purchasing a home that wasn’t tech-friendly.

Multiple homes: 53 percent of respondents prefer owning multiple homes to support their lifestyle interests, such as being near the ocean or cosmopolitan offerings like the theater.

Outdoor amenities: Luxury home buyers value outdoor amenities, such as fireplaces, fire pits and a “garden oasis.”

Many of the features most desired by luxury home buyers can be found in today’s master-planned communities. Nocatee’s gated Coastal Oaks community, for example, features upscale homes with prices up to $1 million. Typical amenities available to Coastal Oaks homes buyers include:

  • two-story foyers
  • first-floor owner’s suites with private studies and sitting areas
  • walk-in closets
  • luxurious “grand baths”

Nocatee’s Willowcove neighborhood, meanwhile, features homes by Lennar and David Weekley, where granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, 42-inch cabinets and 18-inch ceramic floor tiles are the standard, with outdoor fireplaces, summer kitchens and other exterior amenities also available.
