As the holidays draw near, Americans are in full shopping-frenzy mode, busily making purchases and crossing names off their seasonal shopping lists. According to the American Research Group, U.S. shoppers plan to spend an average of $801 on holiday gifts this year -- and for many, their preferred shopping destinations are as close to home as possible.
Whereas in years past extended weekend shopping trips to the big city were an eagerly anticipated part of the holiday season, today’s shoppers, it seems, wish to complete their gift-giving forays in their own backyard. What’s more, it’s a trend that is also reflected in home sales across the nation.
A recent study by the Urban Land Institute found that 62 percent of Americans who plan on moving within the next five years prefer a home that is close to shops, restaurants and services. That’s a change from previous generations of home buyers, who willingly traded inner-city living -- with its easy access to local businesses -- for a chance to own a home in a sprawling suburban bedroom community. As Americans spend more time commuting to and from work, however, the appeal of having a home near shops and services has grown.
A New Kind of Town Center
Today’s master-planned communities have responded to this desire by offering residents nearby shopping and dining options. In addition to being strategically located near major shopping malls, many master-planned communities feature their own distinct town centers. From grocery stores and dry cleaners to restaurants and specialty shops, these local retail districts offer a convenient shopping option for busy residents.
“Nocatee Town Center makes it easy for residents to do their grocery shopping, grab a bite to eat, and frequent numerous specialty shops and businesses,” said Richard Ray, managing partner of The PARC Group, Nocatee’s developer. “As the community grows, the Town Center will also grow, adding new businesses that cater to the thousands of families that call Nocatee home.”
For additional shopping and dining options, Ray noted, Nocatee residents may visit the nearby Avenues Mall and St Johns Town Center. The shops, business and restaurants of Ponte Vedra Beach are also just minutes away, as are the countless amenities of Jacksonville and St. Augustine, home to numerous quaint shops and boutiques and the St. Augustine Premium Outlets.
